Swindon Town Football Club – STFC

Football is one of the most popular sports around the world and in England, it seems that every town has their own football club.

However, what you will find amazing is the diversity of the clubs that are not in the Premier League and this often comes from the fact that so many of the towns have their own clubs. One of those clubs that you typically do not hear a lot about is the Football Club.

Since that is the case and since you probably have not heard a lot about the club, it is time for us to explore the Robins to see what makes them one of the many town clubs that achieved an elevated status.

Founding

Just like a lot of the football clubs that have been around for many years, this is a club that can trace its beginnings back to the 1800s. In fact, the history of the Robins goes all the way back to 1879 a year later they would become the Spartans at the time and then in 1883, they would change their name to Swindon Town. It was from these small beginnings that the team would excel in the football it’s known to be today.

It was not until 1920 that the team would enter the football league, which comes only 26 years after the club decided to turn professional.

At What Level Do The Robins Play?

This is an interesting point as STFC has never managed to play consistently at the top level. However, this is fitting as the club is smaller and does not really have the draw for the top players that a place like Manchester United or Arsenal would have.

At the same time, this also helps the club to be competitive, which of course creates a competitive edge when playing against bigger teams.

What is really nice for the area is as recently as 1970 the team was in the second league. They actually would secure a league final victory as well between the years of 1968 and 1970 before they started to be relegated.

So this is definitely something the Robins would like to change for their loyal supporters. One major accomplishment for the Robins would come in the 1992 to 1993 season in which the Robins would actually be promoted to the top level for the first and only time in the team’s history.

Where Do The Robins Play

The town’s football club is one of the few clubs to say they have been playing on the same pitch for over a hundred years. The current ground the Robins play on was actually the same ground they opened the 1896 season on in County Ground.

Prior to this, the club had been playing on a pitch that is near Bath Road next to the Okus Quarry. However, the club decided a move was in order after a spectator fell into the quarry.

Who Are the Town’s Rivals

There is nothing quite like a local derby football match. There is usually strong rivalry amongst football clubs that are in close proximity or neighbouring towns or cities. STFC’s main rivalry comes with the Oxford United club.

Although our law firm has an office in Swindon, we’ve never been to watch a live match.
